hollywood has been captivated by nelson mandela. for the actors who brought his story to the big and small screen, there is a shared sense of pride to have honored his legacy and an overwhelming grief that he is no longer with us. to be honest, mandela's shoes were tough to fill even as mere props. rebel. prisoner. icon. president. reformer. there are many roles to play for an actor assigned to the legendary part of nelson mandela. at least 20 men have attempted to embody the icon, despite the challenge of replicating his world altering scenes. as the red carpets rolled out for last night's london premiere of "mandela, long walk to freedom" the final act of the leader's life played out offscreen. >> the founding president of our democratic nation has departed. >> mandela's two youngest daughters were at the premiere when they got the bad news. >> we want equal political rights. >> idriss elba will be the final leader to play the icon in his lifetime. but the opinion of his family looms large. >> they didn't want to see this sort of

the world embraced nelson mandela. every time you ask anybody who is your most inspirational leader, everybody says nelson mandela and that's for a reason. in fact, tonight at the u.n. security council not far from where we are now, they are calling a moment of silence to remember and to honor him. he was the most incredible leader for our time, especially as we know, the possibility of violence, of division, of paralysis and partisanship, he really was able to overcome that and his long walk to freedom has benefited the whole world and how ironic it is that the film of his own biography is coming out right now. there are premieres right now, last week in the kennedy center in washington, tonight in london, where his own daughter has been, and there is so much now that is coming out for people to be able to read and to reflect and to pause and remember just what gift this amazing man gave to the world. i interviewed f.w. de clerk, who was his partner in the end and the dismantling of apartheid, one of the world's most

>> reporter: i think he made a very clear swipe at those who have been remembering nelson mandela but of course, people who actually do not by any stretch of the imagination follow in his footsteps at all. i think the handshake in the full, you know, reflection of history which might be in the next quarter of an hour is going to be taken as a handshake. it was a diplomatic situation in which there were a number of leaders who had been appointed to speak. they were all on that dais, including castro and the president of brazil and other leaders, and president obama came up to take his place at the podium and in so doing, had to physically pass those leaders, even those with whom he had no relation and one of them was raul castro, and he shook his hand. he's a polite man. this was a diplomatic gathering. and then on he moved to the president of brazil, and he kissed her on both cheeks even though she canceled a state visit to washington, why, because she was so cross about the nsa and the spying and the spying and eavesdropping on her. so you know, you could have it all ways here. the p

among the throngs of mourners flocking to johannesburg right now to bid farewell to nelson mandela are 91 heads of state, four united states presidents, tens of thousands of south africans and celebrities from all over the world. there will also be elite military troops, snipers and security dogs all there to watch over a stadium meant to hold some 90,000 people. they are coming to pay their respects and of course, celebrate mandela's life. anderson cooper is on the ground in johannesburg, where he caught up with bono. >> mandela also talked a lot about poverty which is obviously an issue very close to your heart. i think he said without the eradication of poverty, there can be no true freedom. >> yeah. overcoming poverty is not the gesture of charity, it's an act of justice. >> that's what you said. >> yes. like slavery, like apartheid, he said poverty is not natural. it is man-made and so it can be overcome by the actions of human beings. he said to some generations, for a chance to be great, you can be that great generation. i have been working for this man since i was a teenager, a

i even have to say that, but we know this in a way that we know martin luther king is not a racist, nelson mandela is not a racist. we know this from their work. this guy has a track record. "hurricane." human dignity. it's threaded throughout the fabric of who he is as an artist. this whole thing just seems insane. i'm saying that with all due respect to whatever pain the people are bringing this charge are feeling. >> jeff, dylan was in paris to receive the legion of honor award when he was charged. the government is not trying to fine him. they're apparently just looking for an apology. if you were his legal adviser, would you tell him to give one? >> you know, bob dylan operates by his own rules. he is a truly great man. i don't think there is any dispute about that. he is a major cultural figure in american history and he has been on the right side of all these issues. it is possible that what he said was misinterpreted. i think it would be a good thing for him to explain what he meant. but certainly the government should not the be involved in punishi
